He graduated in medicine from Manchester University in 2002 and also holds a BSc degree in medical science from the University of St Andrews. He specialised in hospital general medicine until switching to general practice in 2007, passing the MRCGP examination at the first attempt in 2009. He has an interest in musculoskeletal medicine including joint problems, arthritis and injuries and is fully trained in steroid injections where necessary. Other medical interests include diabetes, cardiology, attention deficit disorder and gastroenterology.

Dr Grant has lived in Lytham St Annes since 2016 and has worked locally since. He has two young children, aged 3 and 1 who occupy much of his spare time. He loves conservation, travel, home fitness and collecting books. He also enjoys hillwalking, scrambling and mountain climbing, and has climbed the highest mountains in Africa, the Americas (Aconcagua), Australia, Borneo, Japan, Scotland, England and Wales. He can often be found panting on a slope in the Lake District wondering why he chooses to do this most weekends, until he gets to the top and remembers. He also enjoys competitive quizzing. He plays for the Scotland national quiz team (along with his friend Anne Hegerty from The Chase) in international tournaments; he has twice been on the winning team of the Online Quiz League, the largest and highest standard quiz league in the world; and he has won television shows including Fifteen to One and Cleverdicks. He was crowned BBC Mastermind champion in 2012, although he keeps getting beaten in the semi-finals of Brain of Britain so the quiz double, his big ambition, is proving elusive. If you know any interesting quiz questions, please feel free to try them out on him!
